Of all the reality TV shows that have come and gone since the fad started, very few have caused people to sit up and say, “hey, I can do that, and I can make a mint!” like the house-flipping shows that seem to be everywhere on cable these days. But is what you see on TV accurate? Can the process really be that easy? Let’s take a closer look.

Cleaning: I’m not referring to dusting and mopping here. I mean an intensive “spring cleaning” of certain areas of your home that will deteriorate badly if left alone for too long. Your cabinets and shelves, for example, would probably benefit. Don’t just wipe them off – take them off, and even take them apart, so the joints can have the grime totally washed off. You’ll be amazed at how new they will look when you’re finished!

A lawn service: They set the schedule; they use what appears to be their equipment. You pay them in cash as requested. They are not on your payroll, nor do you supervise them in anyway. These people are obviously immigrants. Are you doing legal business?

Put fire extinguishers in several rooms of your home. Fire extinguishers are particularly important in the kitchen, but they would be a wise investment for practically every room. Fires can break out in electrical wiring, where a chimney passes through a ceiling, and practically anywhere. Be prepared!

Wouldn’t it be great if all dishonest, incompetent contractors were terrible at selling themselves? That way, when you talked to them over the phone or had them present their project idea in your home, you could separate the good from the bad right away.

You may be doing legal business with the housekeeper. She is technically not your employee. She has legal right to do business in this country, accepts check payments. It is a good idea however, to make sure she has insurance and a business permit, but you don’t have to.

Last, there is Earthquake coverage. This covers the structure from damage from an earthquake. Typically the most damage a mobile home will have from an earthquake is from coming off the foundation piers. This usually is not that damaging and can be righted quite easily by a mobile home contractor with the right tools.
